Authorities are asking for the public’s help identifying two suspects in an alleged robbery attempt that played out in a Pitt Meadows, B.C., lobby earlier this year. Ridge Meadows RCMP said the incident involved an online cellphone sale, and should serve as a reminder to be cautious—a timely message as many people are shopping for gifts. “With the holiday season now upon us, we want the public to make informed decisions on protecting not only their personal property, but their personal safety,” Staff Sgt. Michelle Luca said in a statement. “Use designated safety zones or other well-lit public spaces during daylight hours when conducting in-person transactions.” In this instance, the seller arranged to meet with a buyer in the lobby a Harris Road building on the evening of Oct. 10. Authorities said the buyer showed up with a companion, and the pair tried stealing the phone—leading to an altercation that ended with one of the suspects pepper-spraying the victim. The men ultimately fled the scene empty-handed, the RCMP said. Investigators also shared images and surveillance videos of the suspects Monday, asking anyone who can identify either of them to come forward. One suspect is described as Black, 5’8” tall, with a medium build, short black hair and a black moustache. He was wearing glasses, a dark toque and a black pullover with white markings. The other man is described as Black or Middle Eastern, 6’1” tall, with a slim build, short curly hair and a thin moustache. He was wearing a black jacket and track pants. To stay safe while selling things online, authorities recommend telling someone where you’re going, bringing a friend if possible, and meeting at a police station. The RCMP also suggested sellers “trust your gut.”
