Video shows daylight slaying in Abbotsford, B.C., as police identify victim

Police have identified the victim of a fatal shooting in Abbotsford as a 68-year-old Punjabi businessman—and the shocking crime was caught on video.

The moment a masked gunman opened fire on a 68-year-old man sitting in his truck outside of his home in Abbotsford, B.C., Monday morning was captured on chilling surveillance video.

On Tuesday, homicide investigators identified Darshan Sahsi as the victim of the brazen daylight shooting, saying a specific motive has not yet been determined.

Video captured on CCTV and provided to CTV News shows Sahsi getting into his pickup truck. Seconds later, a masked man dressed all in black exits a silver sedan parked across the street and runs to the driver’s side window of Sahsi’s vehicle.

The gunman fires at least nine rounds through the closed window, shattering the glass, before running back to the parked car and driving away — the fatal shooting unfolding in fewer than 15 seconds.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, in a statement Tuesday, reiterated that the shooting on Ridgeview Drive was reported at 9:22 a.m.

“Early indications suggest this was a targeted incident and no one else was injured as a result of the shooting,” a Tuesday statement from IHIT said.

“Investigators are working diligently to determine the motive and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.”

IHIT also released a CCTV image of a silver Toyota Corolla it said was “involved in the homicide,” and is appealing to the public in an attempt to identify its occupant.

“As we continue to build a timeline of events, it is important for anyone with information to contact IHIT immediately,” spokesperson Sgt. Freda Fong said, in the statement.

Investigators are asking anyone who has dash-cam video from the 31300 block of Ridgeview Drive captured between 7 and 10 a.m. Monday to contact them immediately.

Sahsi’s son, Arpan, identified his father as the victim when speaking to CTV News Monday — saying he heard the shots from inside the family’s home.

“I sprung out of my bed and ran outside. I thought maybe he would be OK, I tried to wake him up — but he wasn’t there,” Arpan said, his voice breaking.

Sahsi was a businessman who employed roughly 1,400 people. He was prominent in the Punjabi community and generous to others, his son said.

“I admire how hard he works. I told him, ‘I want to be just like you,’” Arpan recalled.

A steady stream of mourners could be seen at the home on Ridgeview Drive Monday, and Sahsi’s son said seeing the community come together to support the family and one another was heartening in the wake of the shocking tragedy.
