A family-run winery in B.C.’s Okanagan Valley has landed a spot on a list of the 50 best vineyards in the world. Mission Hill Family Estates, in West Kelowna, is the only Canadian entry on 2025’s list, which is chosen by a voting academy comprised of sommeliers, travel experts and industry specialists. “This recognition underscores our team’s commitment, passion and determination to making distinctive, terroir-driven expressions that define the Okanagan Valley in a glass,” said chief winemaker Taylor Whelan, in a statement. “This is an enormously proud moment for every member of our team.” The B.C. winery is featured alongside vineyards in Champagne, Bordeaux, Rioja and the Napa Valley. “Situated on a prominent hill rising above the floor of the Okanagan Valley, Mission Hill Winery has a monastic air about its buildings that welcomes and transforms the visitor,” the description on the list says. “Pass through the earth-toned, entrance arches and enter a world dedicated to fine wine.” The winery was founded in 1981 by the von Mandl family, who still operate the business—which has grown to include a gourmet restaurant, seasonal festivals, and tours on a private yacht.
