Supporters wear purple in honour of Trina Hunt at husband’s court appearance

The lawyer for Iain Hunt has once again successfully argued for a delay in the indignity to human remains case.

After months of delays, friends, family and supporters of Trina Hunt went to court in Port Coquitlam Friday morning hoping the case against her husband Iain Hunt would take a step forward.

They left disappointed.

The judge hearing the case granted a request from Iain Hunt’s lawyer to adjourn the case again, this time until Dec. 19.

Iain Hunt has been charged with indignity to human remains.

In January 2021, he reported his wife missing, triggering an extensive search of their Port Moody neighbourhood.

Trina Hunt’s body was found two months later, near Hope, B.C., more than 100 kilometres away.

In June 2022, a man neighbours identified as Iain Hunt was arrested outside the couple’s home and later released. The indignity to human remains charge was laid in February of this year, but relatively little has happened in court since.

Members of Trina Hunt’s family were visibly distraught as they left court Friday. They did not speak to reporters who were present.

“I think my frustration level is nothing compared to what it must be for their family,” said a supporter named Gail, who attended court in support of Trina Hunt’s family and declined to provide her last name.

The charge of indignity to human remains carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Gail said she’s hopeful additional charges will be laid in connection to Trina Hunt’s death.

Iain Hunt is not in custody and was not required to appear in court in person on Friday. He chose to listen to proceedings via video link.

“I was hoping he would be there to see all the people supporting her family,” Gail said.

More than a dozen supporters of Trina Hunt attended court Friday, all wearing purple ribbons or scarves in her memory. They say they’ll be back in the courtroom again for Iain Hunt’s next scheduled appearance, whether he attends in person or not.
