A 56-year-old man was rushed to hospital in critical condition after gunshots rang out Tuesday in a residential neighbourhood in Maple Ridge, B.C. Investigators say the shooting was likely targeted, with no further risk to the public at this time, even as the suspects remain at large. Mounties responded to reports of shots fired in the 11400 block of 236 Street at approximately 10 p.m. The lone victim was found inside a vehicle suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, the Maple Ridge RCMP said in a news release. The detachment’s serious crime unit has taken conduct of the investigation, with forensic identification experts still processing the scene Wednesday. Bullet holes were visible in the driver-side window of a white Jeep SUV that appeared to be the focus of the investigation. “The investigation is still in its very early stages,” police said in the release. “Officers are continuing to gather evidence and determine exact circumstances, including taking statements and canvassing the area for video surveillance and potential witnesses.” A spokesperson for B.C. Emergency Health Services says paramedics were called to the scene near 236 Street and 114A Avenue at 10:09 p.m. “Multiple paramedic ground and air resources, including primary care, advanced care and critical care paramedics and a paramedic supervisor attended the scene,” spokesperson Brian Twaites said in an emailed statement. “Paramedics provided emergency medical care and transported one patient to hospital in critical condition.” In an update Wednesday afternoon, the RCMP said the victim is known to police and remains in critical condition. “Officers are conducting a number of investigative steps to identify potential suspects,” the update said. “The area will be cordoned off for some time as the investigation continues.” Anyone with information or images from the area is asked to contact the Maple Ridge RCMP.
