Authorities are investigating what appears to be another extortion-related incident in Surrey, B.C., after a local business was targeted with gunfire early Tuesday morning. The Surrey Police Service said officers responded to a reported shooting in the 7200 block of King George Boulevard around 4:30 a.m. “Upon arrival, police located a business and vehicles that had been damaged,” the department said in a news release. “The business was unoccupied at the time and fortunately, nobody was injured as a result of the incident.” The motive hasn’t been confirmed, but authorities said it appears related to the ongoing rash of extortion incidents in the city—which would make it the 35th extortion attempt of the month, and the eighth involving gunfire. Addressing the issue Monday, Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton called the numbers “disturbing.” “They should be very upsetting to everybody,” Houghton said. “It’s wholly unacceptable that there are people in our community that are victimizing and, in some cases, repeatedly victimizing residents and business owners.” Police said their investigation into Tuesday’s incident is in its early stages, and asked anyone with information—or relevant surveillance video or dash-cam footage—to come forward.
