4-year-old boy killed, mother in critical condition after Horseshoe Bay bus crash

A “tragic” crash involving a transit bus left one person dead and another critically injured in West Vancouver, according to police.

An investigation is underway at the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal into what caused a deadly crash involving a TransLink bus.

A four-year-old boy was killed, and his mother remains in hospital in critical condition.

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at the corner of Bay Street and Keith Road.

“We can confirm a four-year-old boy died at the scene. His mother is in critical condition and her friend is in stable condition,” said Sgt. Chris Bigland with the West Vancouver Police Department.

Police say speed was not a factor, but a criminal offence has not been ruled out. The TransLink driver underwent police questioning and is co-operating with investigators.

The bus appeared to have jumped the curb, snapping metal railings and signs like twigs.

“The investigation is dynamic and has many moving parts. This is a serious, life-changing event for the victims, their families, witnesses and many others,” said Bigland.

The bus was towed away from the scene Wednesday night so police can analyze it.

“The sudden death of a child is a uniquely tragic event, severely impacting the family, witnesses, first responders and the community as a whole. To those who stepped up today, who did what they could, thank you. If you need support, please do not hesitate to reach out,” said Bigland.

A witness told CTV News the scene was chaotic and incredibly graphic.

“I saw the hubcap go flying. I heard screaming and it was just horrible. I’m going to have nightmares,” said the man through tears.

Investigators are asking any witnesses or those who may have dash camera footage of what happened to come forward.

The collision happened before the scheduled start of an event called Taste of the Bay, billed as a showcase for local restaurants and businesses.

In a social media post, the Horseshoe Bay Business Association said the event was cancelled pending further notice, citing an “extremely unfortunate” and “unforeseen” incident.
