Two drivers are facing fines and vehicle impoundments after RCMP say a street racing incident along the Trans-Canada Highway on Vancouver Island ended in a collision over the weekend. West Shore RCMP said a 2002 Ford Ranger rolled over “multiple times” before stopping on a median near the 1900 block of the Trans-Canada Highway in View Royal just before 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. “Witnesses told police the Ford Ranger had been driving erratically prior to the collision and had sideswiped another vehicle while changing lanes at a high rate of speed,” Mounties said in a news release Monday. “Through their investigation, officers determined the driver of the Ford Ranger had been street racing with the driver of a 2021 Dodge Ram.” Authorities said both drivers were ticketed for driving without consideration under the Motor Vehicle Act, resulting in $196 fines and six penalty points each. Both vehicles were also impounded for one week. Mounties said the driver of the Ford Ranger was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries. “Street racing is reckless behaviour that puts not only the drivers involved at risk, but every other person sharing the road,” Cpl. Nancy Saggar said in the release. “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Choosing to race on public roads can have serious and lasting consequences, and we encourage all drivers to make safe, responsible decisions behind the wheel.”
