Pair sentenced for killing of B.C. man Surinderjit ‘Jack’ Singh

Two years after the death of Maple Ridge, B.C., man Surinderjit “Jack” Singh, his killers have been sentenced to five years in prison.

Joseph McWilliams and Kimberley Buitenweg were originally charged with second-degree murder, but pleaded guilty earlier this year to the lesser offence of manslaughter.

Both were sentenced Monday in B.C. Supreme Court and given a 10-year firearms prohibition.

On Wednesday, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team thanked everyone involved in bringing the case to a close.

“This was a tragic incident that has left a lasting impact on Mr. Singh’s family and friends,” said Sgt. Freda Fong, in a statement.

The 55-year-old victim was found dead at a Maple Ridge home on March 4, 2023, in circumstances that authorities quickly deemed suspicious.

Officers arrested the accused two months later. At the time, McWilliams was 44 years old and Buitenweg was 33 years old.
