Hullo Ferries workers promise strike vote after contract talks reach impasse

The union representing Hullo Ferries workers says the company has forced it to take a strike vote.

Hullo Ferries has declared an impasse in bargaining, the BC Ferry and Marine Workers’ Union said in a news release Friday.

The union said it has gone nearly a year without a contract and accused the employer of failing to bargain seriously, making only one counterproposal before declaring an impasse and “refusing to move forward.”

“We don’t want to disrupt service, but our members can’t wait forever,” said union president Eric McNeely, in the release.

“Our members would rather be serving passengers than preparing job action. But after nearly a year of waiting for an agreement, they’ve been left with no choice.”

The union said it tabled what it considers a fair wage and benefits proposal “months ago.”

“Hullo ferry workers want stability for themselves and the travelling public,” McNeely said. “The solution is simple: the employer needs to come back to the table and bargain in good faith.”

Asked for comment on the union’s pledge to hold a strike vote, Hullo shared a statement from CEO Ryan Dermody, who said the company hopes to reach a resolution “without any unnecessary disruption.”

“Navigating this process has been complex for everyone involved, and we appreciate the passion and dedication that’s come through on all sides,” the statement reads.

“As we work through our first collective bargaining process with the union, our main focus has been on finding a path forward together that works for everyone.”

Dermody said Hullo’s proposal “includes competitive compensation and enhanced benefits.”

“We see it as a strong step toward our shared goal: ensuring the well-being of our employees while also building a healthy, sustainable company for the long term,” he said.
