Police in Surrey are investigating an extortion-related shooting that damaged a home and vehicle in the early hours of Thursday morning. Officers were called to the scene in the 13400 block of 56 Avenue around 12:50 a.m. for reports of shots fired, the Surrey Police Service said in a statement. “Upon arrival, police located a residence and vehicle that had been damaged. Fortunately, nobody was injured as a result of the incident,” the statement said, adding the shooting appears to be linked to the ongoing extortion-related violence in the city. On Wednesday, the Surrey Police Service said there have been 16 extortions attempts targeting 12 victims reported in the first couple weeks of 2026, including three shootings. Of the 12 victims, 10 were “repeat” victims from the previous year. Anyone who has information about Thursday’s incident or video from the area at the time is urged to call 604-599-0502 and quote file number 26-4746. Mayor weighs in Mayor Brenda Locke issued a statement Thursday addressing the violence in the city over the past week, which has included two homicides in addition to multiple extortion-related incidents. “Everyone deserves to feel safe in their neighbourhoods, and residents want to know that these crimes are being addressed quickly and forcefully,” she wrote. Locke said she will be meeting with the province’s solicitor general to discuss the issues of extortion and gang-related violence, maintaining that the city is already doing “everything within (its) authority” to ensure public safety. “Our community will not accept continued acts of violent crime,” Locke said.
