Travel agents are getting a lot of questions about the safety of travelling to the Caribbean, following U.S. military action in Venezuela. While airspace around the country has reopened, many Canadians planning a getaway remain cautious. “We are seeing Canadians changing some of their travel patterns this year and going further afield,” said Anita Emilio, executive vice-president of Flight Centre Canada. Mexico and northern parts of the Caribbean remain popular, but some tourists are opting for longer and pricier flight to places like Southeast Asia. “Ten nights in Vietnam or Thailand costs about the same as seven nights in Jamaica,” Emilio said. For Canadians considering destinations closer to Venezuela, experts recommend checking the Canadian government’s travel advisories. Travel agents may also suggest cruises, since ships can reroute to avoid ports that are deemed unsafe. Trip cancellation insurance is another key consideration. “Speak to your insurance provider and really share the details of your trip. Where you’re travelling and when you’re travelling,” said Alana Udovicic of BCAA Travel Insurance. How much it costs depends on the type of trip. A vacation in a luxurious resort would likely be more than a more modest adventure.
