Debate over Burnaby Heights’ new Bus Rapid Transit route heats up

TransLink has requested public feedback on a proposed Bus Rapid Transit route between the North Shore and Burnaby.

Plans for a faster, new-and-improved bus service are on the horizon for Metro Vancouver, but where the buses should go is sparking heated debate.

One of the proposed route options for TransLink’s new Bus Rapid Transit line could run straight through Burnaby’s Heights neighborhood along Hastings Street — a move some business owners fear would devastate the community.

Sandro Massullo, owner of Massullo Music, has been repairing and servicing trumpets, trombones, and saxophones in the Heights for nearly 25 years. He worries that dedicated bus lanes would eliminate street parking and drive customers away.

“It’ll destroy our business,” Massullo said. “I don’t see people jumping on a bus with a couple of instruments to get serviced.”

The Heights Merchants Association is raising similar concerns. Executive director Isabel Kolic argues the Hastings option would fundamentally change the neighborhood’s identity, and says dozens of business owners are worried for their future.

“Option one would convert Hastings Street into a permanent six-lane highway,” Kolic said. “It would change the atmosphere of our urban village and the character of the neighborhood.”

Not everyone sees it that way. Transit advocates argue the Hastings corridor would finally deliver reliable service to an area plagued by slow and overcrowded buses. Denis Agar, executive director of the non-profit Movement, has launched a petition urging TransLink to choose Hastings over the alternative option that would run along Boundary and Lougheed.

“One option is through this walkable neighbourhood with lots of small businesses, and the other is in an industrial park,” Agar said.

“We’re pushing TransLink to put better transit here in Burnaby Heights.”

Supporters believe increased foot traffic could boost local business, but skeptics like Massullo insist it would erode the neighbourhood’s identity that has made the Heights thrive for decades.

“I really don’t see the need for the BRT in our area,” said Massullo, adding that the R5 express bus already operates along the street and curbside parking is limited during rush hour. “It would ruin the whole community.”

The BRT project still requires more funding approvals and completion is likely years away.

TransLink is seeking public feedback on the two route options before Sept. 21.
