A child was hospitalized in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle in Surrey, B.C., Friday afternoon. The nine-year-old pedestrian was struck along 81 Avenue, in the city’s Newton neighbourhood, around 2:35 p.m., according to the Surrey Police Service. “The child suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital,” the department said in a new release. The driver remained at the scene and is co-operating with investigators, authorities said. “While the cause of the collision is still under investigation, at this stage impairment is not believed to be a factor,” police said. A pair of children’s shoes, a backpack and other belongings could be seen on the roadway after the incident. The Surrey Police Service said 81 Avenue would be closed between King George Boulevard and 134 Street for “several hours” as officers investigate the scene. Authorities asked anyone with information on the incident, including surveillance or dash-cam video, to contact the department’s non-emergency line at 604-599-0502.
