Three vehicles started the new year in an impound lot after their drivers were caught speeding excessively on the Sea to Sky Highway in one day, according to B.C. Highway Patrol. The first two impounds happened late in the morning of Dec. 30, when a rented Volkswagen and Subaru were seen going “much faster” than other traffic on the highway near Porteau Cove, police recounted in a news release Monday. “The Subaru driver said he sped up because the Volkswagen ‘was tailgating me.’ The tourist driving the rental Volkswagen ‘wanted to get ahead’ at the end of two merge lanes because he was on his way to the airport,” the release reads. Police say the Volkswagen was clocked at 154 km/h and the Subaru 149 km/h, in an 80 km/h zone. “Merge lanes are not the time to get competitive,” spokesperson Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said, in the release. “At best your dangerous driving will gain you a few seconds. At worst you’ll crash horribly or lose hours of your time getting your vehicle impounded by police. If you want to save time, leave earlier and drive the speed limit.” Later in the day, police say a yellow Porche was stopped for going 168 km/h in the same area. “The driver asked police to be ‘considerate’ because she was celebrating her birthday,” according to BCHP. All three drivers were ticketed for excessive speed, which carries a $483 fine, had their vehicles impounded for seven days, and will face at least three years of high-risk driver premiums on their insurance. “It’s our job to keep the roads safe,” McLaughlin added. “If you drive inconsiderately, you will face the consequences no matter the occasion.”
