HALIFAX - Striking bus and ferry operators in Halifax have rejected a contract offer that would have ended a strike that has left commuters scrambling for more than three weeks.

Seventy-eight per cent of union members who voted today rejected the offer.

Mayor Peter Kelly says council unanimously endorsed the offer.

About 750 bus drivers, ferry workers and maintenance staff went on strike Feb. 2 after the city and the Amalgamated Transit Union reached an impasse over shift scheduling.

Halifax's Metro Transit system is the largest in Atlantic Canada with three ferries and more than 300 buses on 61 routes.
