Homicide detectives will interview a man whose pick-up truck smashed through the front window of a busy sushi restaurant in Maple Ridge, B.C., late Thursday, killing two women.

The truck crashed into the Halu Sushi restaurant, filled with about 45 people, shortly after 6 p.m. local time. The restaurant is located at Westgate Mall, at 203rd street and Lougheed Highway.

"He didn't seem to hit his brakes," witness Charlie Nelson told CTV British Columbia. "It just was a straight shot straight down the lane, (he) hit the curb and flew through the window."

"There was blood everywhere and there were bodies all over the place."

Police will interview the 51-year-old driver, who is custody, but it is not known if any charges will be laid. The Integrated Homicide Team has taken over the investigation.

The victims, a 19-year-old and 46-year-old -- both from Maple Ridge - died at the scene. The 46-year-old was reportedly paying her bill at the time of the crash, while the 19-year-old was a Simon Fraser University student who was having dinner with a girlfriend.

Nelson was among the first to enter the restaurant after the crash. He said the truck was sitting on top of tables and counters -- the engine running and the wheels spinning.

"I went in to see if I could help, there was nothing that could be done for anyone in the front of the store," he said.

"The one girl was lying on the floor in front of the store. A lady and myself checked to see if she had a pulse but she had nothing. She was bleeding pretty bad, she wasn't moving."

Three others were injured, including a nine-year-old boy, and were taken to hospital for treatment.
