The Ontario government has announced a $1-million donation to Ukraine as Russia’s invasion of the country nears the five-year mark. In a news release, the premier’s office said the donation is aimed at supporting Ukraine’s energy and infrastructure sectors to “maintain and repair vital energy infrastructure” that has been damaged by ongoing Russian strikes in the region. Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced the donation during a meeting with the political network United for Ukraine, a policy coalition of international lawmakers supporting Ukrainian efforts during the war. The funds will be directed to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. “As the people of Ukraine continue to defend their country against Russia’s illegal invasion and ongoing attacks, including on civilians, Ontario will always stand with those defending freedom and democracy,” Ford said. The fund was established by the federal government through the Energy Community Secretariat in 2022 to counter the impacts of Russian attacks on critical energy infrastructure, according to Global Affairs Canada. “Ontario’s donation to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund will help Ukraine respond to Russian attacks and repair damage to vital infrastructure so the country can continue to defend their sovereignty today and for generations to come,” Ford said. In 2024, the Ontario government donated nearly $5 million in energy equipment to Ukraine, including critical equipment such as transformers and replacement materials.
