Pedestrian dead after being hit by driver in Etobicoke

A male pedestrian has died after being struck by the driver of a vehicle on Tuesday evening in Etobicoke, say Toronto police.

The collision happened near Dundas Street West and Acorn Avenue, just west of Kipling Avenue.

Police say emergency responders were called to that area around 7:20 p.m. for reports of a man who had been hit by a vehicle.

At the scene, they located a 28-year-old man with serious injuries, Duty Insp. Jon Rose told reporters at the scene on Tuesday night.

Paramedics said they responded to a call around that time and transported an adult male to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“Toronto Paramedic Services transported the man to the hospital by emergency run. I can tell you very sadly that this male has been pronounced deceased by doctors at the hospital,” Rose said, noting both the vehicle and the driver involved in this collision remained on scene and are “cooperating with the investigators.”

Charges have not been laid against the driver at this time.

The duty inspector could not say if the victim was crossing the street at a crosswalk or not. He was also unable to say if speed is a factor in this collision.

“We’re asking the public, for any witnesses to come forward. If you were in the area and happen to have any dashcam video that you think captured the events, we would love to hear from you, please,” he said.

“As you know, this is the second fatal collision from today, and it’s actually the third in the last few days. The Toronto Police Service takes every single collision that occurs very seriously, especially when pedestrian is struck.”

Rose added that while this collision is in the “beginning stages of the investigation,” he is nonetheless urging both drivers and pedestrians to “please exercise caution on icy roads and to drive according to the conditions.”

Currently, Dundas is closed between Auckland Road and Acorn due to the investigation and is expected to be shut down for some time “as the investigation unfolds,” Rose said.
