Video shows stolen truck repeatedly ramming into Scarborough jewelry store in attempted robbery

A stolen pickup truck was used in smash-and-grab in Scarborough.

A new video has surfaced showing a stolen pick-up truck repeatedly smashing through a jewelry store during an attempted robbery in Scarborough on Wednesday night.

It happened at a plaza near Eglinton Avenue East and Brimley Road just before 6:30 p.m.

In surveillance footage, obtained by CTV News Toronto, a black pick-up truck can be seen reversing into the storefront, causing shattered glass to cascade onto the back of the vehicle.

At the moment of impact, a group of four suspects can be seen getting out from another light-coloured vehicle from across the parking lot and approaching the jewelry store with black garbage bags and hammers in hand.

The footage shows the suspects attempting to gain access to the store through the front window but they are unable to get inside.

At that point, the group runs back to the parked vehicle across the lot while the truck reverses into the store two more times.

After the third attempt, about half of the truck appears to be inside the store.

The footage then shows the suspects again attempting to enter the store but they appear unable to do so and less than a minute later they run away for the final time.

Duty Insp. Saleem Husain told reporters at the scene on Wednesday night the truck struck a gas line, prompting police to evacuate the plaza until it could be turned off. Husain noted it was busy at the time of the incident.

Husain said the store owner sustained minor injuries from the attempted smash-and-grab robbery.

“We’ve also learned that the vehicle used to back into the jewelry store was stolen,” Husain said.

Toronto police are searching for five masked suspects in connection with the incident, but no further descriptions have been provided about them at this time.
