Flood outlook in effect for GTA ahead of up to 25 mm of rain Tuesday

Time to bust out the umbrellas as up to 25 millimetres of rainfall is expected to shower the Greater Toronto Area on Tuesday, according to the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA).

Environment Canada anticipates 15 to 25 millimetres of rain to drench the region starting early Tuesday morning and continuing through the afternoon. The amount of rain prompted the TRCA to issue a flood outlook for the GTA, which is in effect until Wednesday evening.

With the amount of rain in tomorrow’s forecast, the TRCA says there is a higher potential for flooding due to the possible risk of thunderstorms coupled with widespread rain in that short period that could cause rivers to overflow.

“All shorelines, rivers, and streams in TRCA jurisdiction should be considered dangerous as this rainfall may cause rapidly changing water levels and stronger and faster flows in TRCA rivers,” the authority said in a notice on Monday.

“TRCA watersheds have already received between 3-9 mm of rainfall over the past 48 hours and these wet ground conditions will reduce the capacity for further infiltration.”

Though it will be rainy, Environment Canada forecasts Tuesday’s temperature in Toronto will be warmer with a high of 21 C.

Wednesday and Thursday will bring more rain and a slightly cooler daytime high of 18 C.

The chance of showers falls a bit on Friday, Environment Canada forecasts, with a 30 per cent chance through the day.
