Ontario records fewer than 100 new COVID-19 cases for fifth straight day

TORONTO — Ontario has recorded fewer than 100 new cases of COVID-19 for the fifth day in a row.

Provincial health officials logged 88 new patients infected with the novel coronavirus on Friday, bringing the total number of lab-detected cases in Ontario, including deaths and recoveries, to 39,897.

Last week, Ontario logged fewer than 100 new cases of the disease for the first time since the end of March. Since then, the daily case count in the province surpassed 100 for a few days over the weekend but has continued to trend downward throughout this week.

There were no additional COVID-19-related deaths confirmed in the province on Friday. The province’s death toll remains at 2,783.

There are currently 66 patients infected with the disease in Ontario hospitals. Of those patients, 28 are being treated in the intensive care unit and 12 of those are breathing with the assistance of a ventilator.

The number of recovered patients in the province is now 36,024.

Where are the new COVID-19 cases?

Twenty-seven of Ontario’s 34 local public health units reported five or fewer cases on Friday, with 18 reporting none at all.

Ottawa recorded 15 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, as did Peel Region. Toronto logged 10 more infections and Windsor-Essex recorded four.

All of Ontario, except Windsor-Essex, has moved onto Stage 3 of the province’s reopening plan.

COVID-19 testing in Ontario

Since the start of the pandemic, more than 2.3 million COVID-19 tests have been conducted in Ontario.

In the last 24 hours, more than 25,000 tests were conducted.

There are currently 25,077 tests under investigation in the province.
