Another sinkhole forms in city’s east end, road closures in effect

Officials say a vehicle fell through the concrete after it drove over a stretch of road that had been compromised by a broken watermain.

Road crews are dealing with a large sinkhole that formed in the city’s east end Wednesday morning.

Toronto police said they received reports of the sinkhole in the area of Boultbee Avenue and Jones Avenue at 7:30 a.m.

In a statement to CTV News, Bill Shea, Toronto Water’s director of distribution and collection, said a preliminary investigation determined the sinkhole was caused by a watermain break.

“City crews are now working to identify the repairs required,” Shea said.

Jones Avenue is currently closed in both directions between Boultbee Avenue and Myrtle Avenue as repairs are underway. It is unclear when the road will reopen.

This is the second time in two days that a large sinkhole has formed in East York.

On Tuesday, crews were called to the city’s Parkview Hills neighbourhood, near O’Connor Drive and St. Clair Avenue East, after a vehicle became stuck in a sinkhole also caused by a watermain break.
