6 Toronto police officers charged in Project South now suspended without pay

Six suspended Toronto police officers charged in a bombshell investigation into corruption and organized crime are no longer receiving their pay.

Toronto police media relations officer Amy Davey confirmed to CP24 on Saturday that Const. Timothy Barnhardt, Sgt. Robert Black, Const. John Madeley Jr., Sgt. Carl Grellete, Const. Saurabjit Bedi and Const. Elias Mouawad are now suspended without pay as they await their trial.

A seventh officer charged in the Project South investigation, Const. Derek McCormick, who was at first suspended with pay, will no longer get paid as of May 1. Davey said McCormick was served a notice of suspension without pay on March 2, and it would take effect in 60 days.

Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw initially indicated he would seek only unpaid suspensions for four officers in the wake of Project South, but later said he would consider suspending all seven without pay.

All seven are facing a combined 41 charges.

The allegations against some of the officers include accessing confidential information to facilitate a murder plot against a manager at an Ontario correctional facility, taking bribes, protecting illegal cannabis dispensaries for drug traffickers, and identity theft.
