Superstar golfer Tiger Woods paid his first alleged mistress, New York nightclub executive Rachel Uchitel, US$10 million to keep quiet, TMZ.com is reporting.

The website said the payment for the confidentiality agreement could vary by about $1 million, but the baseline is about $10 million.

"There were numerous reports Rachel settled on the brink of holding a Gloria Allred-style news conference for anywhere between $2 - 5 million," the entertainment website said.

"But our sources -- and they are good -- tell TMZ Tiger was so concerned with the depth and detail of information (from Uchitel) . . . (he) offered the huge $10 million sum in return for an ironclad confidentiality agreement."

The report comes just as the world's best golfer is trying to put his sordid past behind him and return to the game.

Woods is set to play in the Masters next week after a five-month layoff in which he sought counseling for sex addiction and attempted to repair his marriage to his wife, Elin.

The affairs came to light after Woods was involved in car accident in November.

After Uchitel, about a dozen alleged mistresses came forward. TMZ reported some of them also signed confidentiality agreements for payment, but for substantially less than Uchitel.
