Canadian speed skater and Olympic medallist Denny Morrison broke his leg in a motorcycle accident Thursday night in Calgary and will have a metal rod inserted to stabilize the bone.

The 29-year-old is being treated for a fractured femur as well as other non life-threatening injuries at Foothills Hospital according to a statement Friday from Speed Skating Canada.

"Denny Morrison is presently under the care of the Calgary’s Foothills Hospital orthopaedic trauma surgery department, which is in constant communication with Canadian speed skating team head doctor Victor Lun," the statement said.

"Morrison suffered a clean fracture through the middle of his femur and will need an operation for the placement of a metal rod to stabilize the femur."

Morrison appeared to have collided with a car on Calgary's Charleswood Drive. The accident left debris strewn across the road. Photos of the scene showed the car flipped on its side and the badly damaged bike lying on the pavement.

It isn't clear whether Morrison's skating career will be negatively affected by the accident.

"It is premature at this point to determine what will come next, as well as the duration of his convalescence. However, knowing Denny's determination, we know he will do everything possible to be back on his feet as soon as possible," said Speed Skating Canada's High Performance Director Brian Rahill.

Morrison is an accomplished athlete with four Olympic medals to his name. He won gold in 2010 and silver in 2006 in the team pursuit event, as well as silver at the 2014 Sochi Olympics in the 1,000-metre event and bronze in the 1,500.
