TORONTO - A trickle of people have returned to their homes in northwestern Ontario but hundreds are still being kept away by forest fires.

Officials say 150 members of the Mishkeegogamang First Nation, which is accessible by road, returned home by bus.

But there are still 3,400 evacuees waiting for the smoke to clear so that they can get home.

Officials say there have been three new fires in the last 24 hours, bringing the total of active fires to at least 116.

The evacuees are spread across much of the province and yesterday afternoon the premier stopped by to meet with some from Sandy Lake.

Dalton McGuinty played ball hockey and ate bannock bread with them in Arthur, north of Waterloo.
