HALIFAX - A Canadian soldier says he handled two weapons immediately after a fellow soldier was shot at a military base in Afghanistan in 2007.

Master Cpl. Andrew Noseworthy is testifying today in Halifax at the court martial of former reservist Matthew Wilcox of Glace Bay, N.S.

Wilcox has pleaded not guilty to criminal negligence causing death and negligent performance of a military duty in the death of Cpl. Kevin Megeney of Stellarton, N.S., at the Kandahar Airfield.

Noseworthy says he was on the opposite side of a partition in the tent when he heard a shot shortly after hearing Wilcox and Megeney in conversation.

He says he ran around to the other side of the tent where he saw Megeney lying near his bed and Wilcox kneeling beside him.

Noseworthy says he picked up two 9-mm pistols lying nearby and noticed that one was loaded with a round in the chamber while the other weapon wasn't.

The court martial that resumed today after an almost three-month break is Wilcox's second, ordered after the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada set aside a 2009 guilty verdict.
