A security scare near the prime minister's official residence in Ottawa has led to one man's arrest.

Police say that a suspect was arrested after he was seen "igniting a small quantity of flammable liquid" just steps from 24 Sussex Drive on Saturday around 9:15 p.m.

He then dumped some of the liquid on the sidewalk, according to police.

The scare prompted police to shut down roads in the vicinity as officers swarmed the scene. The man was standing outside the fence at the time of his arrest.

CTV News reported that Prime Minister Stephen Harper was at home during the incident. But the RCMP says that Harper and his family were never in danger.

More details are expected to be released on Sunday as the suspect makes an appearance in court.

This isn't the first time that such an incident has occurred at the prime minister's residence.

In 1995, a man broke onto the grounds of 24 Sussex, busted a window and entered the home, where he spent 30 minutes wandering around the main floor.

Later, he was confronted by Jean Chretien's wife, Aline, who called police.
