Celebrity deaths, sports and Disney’s mega-hit Frozen were among the top Google searches in Canada this year.

The highest-trending Google Canada search item of 2014 was Robin Williams, who died by suicide in August. Two other celebrities who died this year -- comedienne Joan Rivers and actor Philip Seymour Hoffman -- also topped Google’s list of top trending celebrities, along with the always popular Jennifer Lawrence.

Canada’s top trending searches in 2014 also included the World Cup in Brazil and the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Jian Ghomeshi, who was fired as host of CBC’s Q and charged with four counts of sexual assault, was the top trending Canadian, according to Google. He was followed by Toronto’s former mayor Rob Ford and former federal finance minister Jim Flaherty, who died suddenly in April.

The animated movie Frozen, a major hit with both kids and adults, was No. 1 on Google Canada’s top trending movies list. It was followed by Interstellar, Divergent and Godzilla.

The top technology search items were the iPhone 6, followed by Nexus 6 and Samsung Galaxy S5.
