It’s the stuff of science fiction: coffee delivery by robot. But a Dutch technology hub is making it a reality.

Inventors at the A Lab in Amsterdam have come up with the “Coffee Copter,” a drone that serves up coffee ordered through a smartphone app. Customers place their order through the app, and the drone delivers its caffeinated cargo anywhere inside the 33-office A Lab complex.

Baristas at A Lab’s Coffee Virus café prepare the orders and package them up for the automated drone to drop off at any of the building’s tech startup and new media offices. The drone carries the coffee along a pre-programmed flight path and deposits the drink on a special landing pedestal at the end of its journey.

The ‘Coffee Copter’ is equipped with stabilizers to prevent the coffee from spilling, and it uses sensors to avoid bumping into objects or people at the bustling tech and new media complex.

The tech firm Purrontwerp & Skeyework is now looking for investors so it can perfect the 'Coffee Copter' design.

With a little caffeine-fuelled inspiration, the coffee drone could be ready for the commercial market in the near future.
