Summer break is officially over for thousands of students across Saskatoon as they returned to the classroom on Wednesday. For many students, the first day back means reconnecting with friends and getting ready for activities they’re looking forward to, including gym class. Parents are looking forward to getting back into a routine. “We thrive on routine and I think these kids are very ready to get back into the school year and see their friends and have some structure,” one parent said. As students return to classes, police are reminding drivers to slow down around schools. While school-zone speed limits remain in effect year-round, but with students back, police are stepping up enforcement. “We have school buses. We have cars, we’ve got kids, we’ve got parents, we’ve got teachers. And all of that makes for a pretty hectic situation. But if everybody participates to make it safe, it’ll be safe,” said Sgt. Brock Lynden of the Saskatoon Police Service. Although Wednesday marks the official start of the school year, most students are easing back into the classroom with a half-day before beginning full days of instruction.
