Saskatoon police say shoplifters are becoming more violent and increasingly likely to carry weapons during thefts. The warning comes after the Saskatoon Police Service’s Community Mobilization Unit completed a five-day retail crime blitz in several shopping areas across the city. Police say the operation focused on the 300 and 400 blocks of Confederation Drive, Preston Crossing retail area and 8th Street East. Officers conducted high visibility patrols, worked with retailers and community partners, and engaged with the public in an effort to deter crime. During the initiative, police arrested 13 people on charges ranging from theft and breaching court-ordered conditions to drug possession and weapons offences. Officers also executed 19 outstanding warrants related to Criminal Code offences, provincial statutes and bylaws. “More than $800 worth of property was recovered for retailers. Officers also recovered a mountain bike and two pairs of prescription sunglasses, three items with a combined value of around $1800,” police said. An additional 10 people were arrested for public intoxication during the operation.
