Saskatoon received twice as many pothole reports as last year

As the city shifts back into a spring thaw, Saskatoon crews are on the lookout for potholes. Stacey Hein has more on what's being done to address them.

Repeated freeze-thaw cycles have led to a surge in potholes across Saskatoon, with reports doubling from this time last year.

Cam LeClaire, roadways manager for the City of Saskatoon, said nearly 2,000 potholes have been reported so far this year, up by about 1,000 compared with the same time last year.

“We’re definitely seeing a lot more potholes this year than in previous years,” LeClaire said. “We’re attributing that to a lot of freeze and thaw conditions throughout the winter season.”

The road damage is creating frustration for drivers.

“It’s pretty frustrating,” Jessica Sopatyk said. “I always wince a little bit and hope my tire didn’t like completely crumble.”

“I almost thought I popped my tire,” Robin Skurat said.

The city encourages residents to report potholes using its online map.

Potholes that pose a risk of injury or vehicle damage should be reported by phone, LeClaire says.

Heather Hubic, a spokesperson for SGI, said vehicle damage caused by potholes is usually covered, but said drivers should still use extra caution.

“Making sure that you’re taking a nice slow speed, giving yourself space around you and the other vehicles so you can spot those hazards early and steer around safely when it’s clear to do so.”

In the meantime, LeClaire said 10 to 13 crews will be out fixing potholes and urged drivers to slow down in work zones.
