The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) Economic Crime Section is warning residents about an impersonation scam. In the scam, fraudsters impersonate representatives of legitimate small festivals and tradeshows. Their goal is to solicit potential vendors to register for what they believe is a festival or tradeshow, then steal their application fees. The SPS Economic Crime Section says residents should understand that websites, social media pages and emails may be fraudulent, and should use other forms of communication to verify the person or organization is legitimate. SPS adds residents should independently verify any money transfer details before sending funds and report any misleading or fraudulent web or social media pages to event hosts. If you’ve been a victim of a fraud or scam, you’re asked to contact SPS at 306-975-8300. If you see a suspicious advertisement and suspect it’s fraud, but you’ve not been victimized, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
