Sask. First Nation breaks ground on new casino development

WATCH: A sod turning in Sask.marks the start of a project that will see the Gold Eagle Casino relocate beside an extensive new business and industry hub.

Big changes are on the horizon for a First Nation in west-central Saskatchewan.

A sod turning was held Monday to mark the start of a project in North Battleford by the Mosquito, Grizzly Bear’s Head, Lean Man First Nation (MGBHLM) that will see the relocation of the Gold Eagle Casino within an extensive new business and industry hub.

Chief Tanya Aguilar-Antiman is leading the charge in the $100-million development on the eastern side of North Battleford, located on a service road bordering Highway 16, which will be the future home of the Gold Eagle Casino, a convention centre and more.

“It’s a historic day, and, it’s been in the works for a couple of decades, but in reality, a hard push in the last two years,” Aguilar-Antiman told CTV News.

The news means that the existing Gold Eagle Casino on the east end of the city will not renew its sublease agreement with SIGA in April of 2027 in preparation for the new development, which will sit on 67 acres across the street from The Tropical Inn.

“It’s a tremendous growth, it’s opportunities and it’s a demonstration of a nation, taking the lead and working collectively with all the partners,” she said.

That means it will also benefit other First Nations in the region and across the province, as casinos under the umbrella of SIGA share profits with all 74 member nations.

Chief Cody Benson from nearby Red Pheasant Cree Nation and Chief Evan Taypotat from Kahkewistahaw First Nation were on hand for the unveiling and sod turning ceremony. FSIN Vice Chief David Pratt attended, bringing support from the FSIN and Chief Bobby Cameron.

“This is home to all of us and surrounding first nations in the area. And, you know, Mosquito, Grizzly Bear’s Head, Lean Man is proud to take a lead,” Aguilar-Antiman said.

This is also a major announcement for the city of North Battleford. Mayor Kelli Hawtin says it’s likely going to mean more people stopping off the highway rather than passing through.

“Just really pleased with this land sale here. This is the most significant value land sale the City of North Battleford has ever had, so we’re celebrating that, to start with, and lots more to come,” she said.

The project doesn’t have a specific start-up date yet.

“All those kinds of discussions will be taking place. We’ve been having discussions already and, the movement is now. The land is purchased and everything that we need to do to move forward with things coming in place. We’re going to make it a reality,” Aguilar-Antiman said.

Based on early feasibility assessments, the project is expected to create 350 construction jobs and 400 long-term positions.

Projections estimate it will generate millions of dollars in new annual tourism revenue, while attracting more than half a million visitors each year.
