It’s an incredible story about facing some of the biggest challenges life can throw at you and still rising above it all. One year ago, Saskatchewan Huskies quarterback Anton Amundrud was facing a diagnosis of T-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which took him off the gridiron. Fast forward to Friday, when he could find his way into the team’s football regular-season record books. They are records that have stood for 30 years, but as the saying goes, records are made to be broken. Amundrud just needs 123 yards passing to surpass former Huskies quarterback Brent Schneider as the program’s all-time leader in regular-season passing yards. Schneider set that record back in 1996 when his career passing total reached 8,294 yards. Amundrud currently sits behind him at 8,172. Though setting a new individual passing record would certainly get the recognition it deserves, Amundrud is quick to give credit to his teammates around him. “At the end of the day, being mentioned with all those great Huskie quarterbacks is always a great feeling. At the end of the day though, it’s a team game,” Amundrud said. Amundrud could also eclipse Schneider in all-time career touchdown passes, sitting only two back with 54 in his time with the Huskies. It would be an impressive accomplishment considering Amundrud had to miss most of last season to get medical treatment. Since then, he’s battled back, eventually returning to the field in time for this season. “What he’s overcome the last year and how he’s handled it and embraced it and how much of a leader he is for us. It’s nice to see him be able to chase those goals and milestones in his career,” said receiver Dawson Lennea. “He doesn’t talk about it as much as he might think because he’s just so focused on getting wins and helping the team. But yeah, it’s awesome for him.” Head coach Scott Flory says it’s incredible how Amundrud has continued to excel even in the face of adversity. “The up and down. Just everything that happened in his personal life. For him to come back this year and be executing at such a high level, it’s remarkable.” But it’s not just the record books fans will be watching. The Huskies could also clinch first place in the conference if they win against the Golden Bears combined with a UBC Thunderbirds loss to the Regina Rams. Saskatchewan has been posting eye-popping numbers offensively, including racking up 40 points a game this season. Kickoff is Friday night at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon.
