A 49-year-old Russian woman will remain in custody in Newfoundland after being pulled off a flight that was bound for New York City.

The woman was a passenger on a Delta Airlines Boeing 767 that was en route to New York on Wednesday afternoon.

The plane landed in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, N.L., because of a disturbance on board involving a woman who police say was intoxicated and unruly.

After the woman's arrest, the plane continued on to its destination.

Irina Shevchenko, a Russian citizen who lives in New York, faces charges under the Aeronautics Act.

She will appear in court Friday afternoon to enter a plea, according to local RCMP.
