The University of Regina has made history by naming Cadmus Delorme as its new chancellor. Delorme, a member of Cowessess First Nation, is the first Indigenous person to hold the position. He has served in various roles at the university, including chair of the board of governors. “To be part of the University of Regina and the bigger family, I am here for all 95,000 alumni,” Delorme said. The chancellor is elected by the university’s senate for a three-year term. The role includes responsibility for the institution’s academic welfare, membership on the board of governors, representing the university, and participating in convocation ceremonies. “His leadership will be transformational as chancellor. It’s a new beginning in terms of what he’ll bring to that office,” said david Gregory, provost of the university. Delorme was installed during a convocation ceremony Thursday, where he also congratulated graduates as they crossed the stage. Allen Brabant, who worked with Delorme during his time as chief of Cowessess First Nation, attended the ceremony. “He’s a role model for youth, especially Indigenous people in this province,” Brabant said. “It’s a testament to where we are and where we’re moving toward, and that’s something positive.” In his new role, Delorme plans to continue discussions on normalizing reconciliation in academia, international relations, and artificial intelligence. “[I plan to] learn to walk in both worlds. You don’t have to compete; they coexist,” he said. “I am a prime example of what reconciliation is on this land we all share.”
