Four people were arrested following a dispute over a tenant eviction in Regina after they refused to leave a housing office. On Thursday, a group of community advocates who had come to advocate for a woman facing eviction from her rental home were led away from the Silver Sage Housing Office in handcuffs. “Stop the eviction,” the protestors chanted. “Justice for Krista.” “This is my home,” Krista Shore said. “I raised my children here. “One was only nine months old when we came.” Shore has lived in her Silver Sage Housing unit for the past 13 years. Following an inspection this spring, she says the landlord accused her of having too much stuff in her small home. . “They said that it was all junk and they even went to label me as a hoarder,” she said. Shore said she hired a truck and hauled out a considerable number of possessions. The home was again inspected in August, and she was served with an eviction notice for noncompliance with an order regarding the condition of the unit. Housing advocates who have visited the home disagree with the eviction attempt. “I’ve been in this house. Multiple people here that know Krista have been in the house before the inspection, after she worked really tirelessly to get it in shape for the inspection and I was in there as recently as this past week. It is not a house that people should be evicted over,” Mandla Mthembu said. The protesters refused to leave until the eviction notice was lifted. It led to the arrest of four people. “She’s been there 13 or 14 years and a person that I think most housing places would love to have a tenant like her,” said another advocate, Bob Hughes. All have since been released but it is not known if any charges were laid. The Silver Sage office was not open on Friday so a response from the landlord was not possible. The eviction is scheduled to be reviewed by the Office of Residential Tenancies at the end of the month.
