Sheldon Williams Collegiate in Regina is celebrating its 70th birthday and invited former students to come and take a tour. The high school opened in 1956 on Coronation Street in west Regina. Tens of thousands of students have walked these halls over the decades and received their high school diploma. On Friday, hundreds of former students enjoyed walking those halls again — seeing so many familiar, but slightly older, faces. The school welcomed not just former students, but anyone in the community who wanted to take a look. Back in 1967, Scott Lawson was in Grade 9 and team manager for the boys basketball team when coach Lorne Aston gave him a rather special assignment. “Paint the basketballs white,” Lawson told CTV News, while gesturing to one of the basketballs. “And because I was a drafting class student, print the names of all the team members and the coaches on the white basketballs.” Sheldon alumni say a few things about the building have changed over the decades, but the floors are still exactly the same as when the school was built. And yes, there are still manual pencil sharpeners in some of the classrooms.
