Sask. NDP raises concerns over SaskPower’s long-term rate projections

The Saskatchewan NDP say a leaked document suggests the governments plan could raise power rates up to 90 per cent by 2040. Wayne Mantyka reports.

The Saskatchewan NDP is raising concerns about future electricity costs, claiming leaked SaskPower documents project significant rate increases over the next 15 years as the Crown corporation transitions to new energy sources.

During question period Tuesday, NDP MLA Aleana Young pointed to what she described as an internal SaskPower briefing note outlining projected increases tied to rising operating costs and future power generation projects, including nuclear energy.

“A briefing note prepared by SaskPower officials warns that under the Sask. Party government’s plan and I quote, ‘The average cost of electricity is projected to be 20 per cent higher by 2030 and 95 per cent higher by 2040 without carbon tax,’” she said.

The Opposition also criticized the government’s plan to refurbish coal-fired power plants, arguing the long-term costs will ultimately fall on ratepayers.

Adding the province’s coal refurbishment strategy would cost roughly $26 billion over the next 25 years, though that figure includes operating expenses such as salaries and coal supply costs. The provincial government says the actual capital cost is significantly lower.

Premier Scott Moe defended the government’s energy strategy, while criticizing the NDP’s proposed alternatives.

“Unlike the members’ opposite plan of which no one has endorsed. In fact, we’ve had representatives today and yesterday representing over 1,400 SaskPower workers and the procurement industry that are speaking out loudly against their plan,” Moe said during question period.

The NDP argues Saskatchewan could reduce costs by shifting more heavily toward natural gas, solar and wind generation. The government disputes those claims, saying the alternative approach would be more expensive in the long run.

Regardless of the path chosen, both sides acknowledge Saskatchewan residents are likely to face higher electricity costs in the years ahead.
