Gainer the Gopher is an icon, and the Saskatchewan Roughriders are accepting auditions for the next person to embody the spirit of the legendary burrower. “Energy. Personality. Enthusiasm,” the Roughriders said in a post on the team’s LinkedIn. “If you can bring the hype and keep Rider Nation smiling, we want to see you!” The post is accompanied by a job application form, describing the role. “As one of the most recognizable ambassadors of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Gainer helps bring our brand to life by creating unforgettable moments for fans of all ages,” the Riders said. “We are seeking an engaging, energetic, and outgoing individual who is passionate about connecting with people, spreading Rider pride, and creating positive, memorable interactions wherever they go.” It goes on to detail the duties and responsibilities of being the most famous mascot in the Canadian Football League, such as: The posting also advises that the applicant must live in Saskatchewan, and that travel to and from Regina is not a covered expense. Live performance experience and sports or football knowledge is considered an asset, but not a requirement. Applicants need to have a valid drivers’ license, be at least age 18 and pass a criminal record and vulnerable sector check. Those interested can submit an audition video through the job posting. “Your audition video should be 3–5 minutes and give us a strong sense of your personality, performance style, and your approach on how you would take on the personality of our iconic mascot,” the Riders said. “Show us how you would bring the energy, engage a crowd, connect with our fans. Let your enthusiasm shine — we can’t wait to see what you bring!” Gainer the Gopher has been a staple at Rider home games since his first appearance in 1977, along with countless community events over the years. According to an official bio on the Riders’ website, Gainer was one of 38 children born to Dwayne and Agnes Gopher, owners of a small trenching and excavation company in Parkbeg, approximately 126 kilometres west of Regina.
