Many different dogs were on their best behaviour over the weekend, as an obedience training course got underway at Regina-based Kaos Dogsports Inc. The organization is described as a “positive reinforcement, games, and reward based training facility” in the Queen City. Dozens of eager canines showed off their skills at the Ottawa Street business on Saturday. “It’s a CARO, which is a Canadian Association Rally Obedience. It’s a fun match to prepare all the dogs that are coming into our trial next weekend,” KAOS President Donna Lewis explained. As part of the upcoming competition, the pups have the chance to win prizes and ribbons for demonstrating their obedience. The competition is set to include walking and running courses and even maneuvers through dog-friendly tunnels. Some of the more advanced pups are slated to perform tricks, jumps and navigation through cones. “Dogs need to have some foundation training before they actually start rally. So they need to know how to walk the leash. They need to know how to sit. They need to stay calm when they’re called - so all of that we work into different exercises,” Lewis explained. “While we train rally, we teach our dogs [with] lots of praise and rewards. We do not jerk or pop the leash. We want dogs that will work as a team,” she added. According to Lewis, any dog can undergo training. However, it’s best to start them young. “Certain breeds are harder than other breeds to train,” she explained. “Some are more independent. They have to learn how to work with you as a team leader. Some dogs have their own agenda and like to do their own thing. If you start a puppy, even at six months of age, you should be ready to come into rally.” The obedience training consisted of many different breeds and ages. Approximately 50 dogs will participate in the upcoming competition.
