The provincial government’s 2026–27 budget includes plans to improve health care in Yorkton, including the hospital. In the 2026–27 budget announced on Wednesday, Yorkton is highlighted as a beneficiary of multiple health-related initiatives. In its press release, the government said it has approved or expanded Patient Medical Homes in 10 communities, including Yorkton. The government also plans to expand its Rural Physician Incentive Program in the city to attract more doctors. The new budget includes additional assessment capacity for internationally trained physicians to help ensure residents’ need for a family doctor is met. The 2026–27 health budget includes a total of $635.7 million allocated for capital projects and for modernizing existing facilities. The list of major infrastructure projects highlights the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, which will receive funding for ongoing planning activities. Amid heavy criticism from the Saskatchewan NDP in previous months, Yorkton Saskatchewan Party MLA David Chan reassured residents in February that the government remains committed to building a new health care facility. Chan said funding for a new hospital has been planned since 2021 and has supported feasibility studies, infrastructure reviews, and consultations with the Saskatchewan Health Authority and SaskBuilds. At a press event in Regina on Wednesday, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe also reassured the public of his government’s commitment to building a new health care facility. “What we found through the pre-design and needs assessment process is that, with additional people living in Saskatchewan and health care needs changing over the last several years, the services we offer need to be expanded,” the premier said with relation to healthcare facilities across the province. According to the recently published health budget, planning for Yorkton’s hospital is set to continue into 2027. “The Yorkton hospital is very much a commitment of this government, and we are going to work through that process and build that hospital,” Moe said.
