Two drivers are facing a long list of charges following two separate incidents which saw them reportedly flee police in Regina. The first incident occurred just after 1 a.m. on Saturday. Regina Police Service (RPS) officers tried stopping a vehicle in the area of 11th Avenue and Smith Street. According to Regina police, the driver chose to evade officers by speeding through a red light. The service’s police plane monitored the situation from the sky — as the driver reportedly reached speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour while running multiple red lights. A tire deflation device was deployed with the hopes of safely stopping the vehicle. Near the intersection of Assiniboine Avenue and University Park Drive, the driver reportedly lost control and collided with a parked car. The driver, a 27-year-old man, got out of the vehicle and ran from the scene. While running away, the driver discharged bear spray in the direction of officers, according to police. A police dog was deployed and caught up with the suspect, biting him. He was taken into custody soon after, while a can of bear spray was seized nearby. The man was treated for injuries sustained from the police dog. The accused faces six charges including operating a vehicle dangerous to the public, fleeing police, failing to stop after an accident, resisting arrest, assaulting a peace officer with a weapon and possessing a weapon. He made his first appearance in Regina Provincial Court on Monday. The second incident occurred at around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday. Officers found a reportedly stolen vehicle in the area of Sixth Avenue and Pasqua Street. According to police, the vehicle was being driven by a man at a high rate of speed, including into oncoming traffic. The RPS tactical support team attempted to stop the vehicle. However, all efforts were unsuccessful and the suspect continued to evade officers. Police were finally able to stop the vehicle in the area of Broad Street and Victoria Avenue. RPS says officers ordered the driver to get out of the vehicle multiple times, but he did not comply. A police dog was deployed but was unable to get to the suspect. Eventually, the suspect did exit the vehicle and was arrested without further incident. He was treated for dog bite-related injuries. The 33-year-old accused faces five charges including possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, operating a vehicle dangerous to the public, failing to stop after an accident, fleeing from police and resisting arrest. The accused is set to make his first appearance in Regina Provincial Court on Nov. 26.
