Legacy Co-op plans to open Yorkton travel centre in late 2026, early 2027

WATCH: Legacy Co-op has announced the construction of a new travel centre in the City of Yorkton, which will feature many amenities.

Legacy Co-op is planning to build an $18.5 million travel centre at the corner of Highway 9 and Grain Millers Drive, in north Yorkton.

The facility will include fueling, showers, washrooms, laundry, a truckers’ lounge and family-friendly facilities. Legacy Co-op has said the centre will provide a “fast, clean and reliable place to fuel, park and refresh.”

“There will be six lanes for our six fueling stations for heavy traffic for semis and we’re trying to separate the heavy traffic from the light traffic,” Legacy Coop general manager Harley McClughan told CTV News on Tuesday.

According to the organization’s plans, parking will accommodate approximately 30 semis and there will be a separate area for approximately 15 RVs, supported by a sani-dump.

Those who are looking for refreshments, the travel centre will offer food and beverages, including hot meals, deli sandwiches, salads, and veggie trays.

Travelers accompanied by pets can also expect some services.

“We’re going to plan on having a picnic area and an off-leash dog park as well, because pets are common, and we want one to attract various clientele to the place,” McClughan explained.

The development covers roughly 10 acres and includes a 6,400 square foot convenience store and lounge. The co-op has begun to seek out funding to support the project.

“We’ve met with Cornerstone Credit Union recently to talk about financing options,” McClughan added. “We’re local and we want to try to keep our financing local as well.”

The area of the future travel centre is currently fields, which belongs to the rural municipality of Orkney and is currently undergoing construction as water service is being extended to the area.

The project is currently pending final approvals.

“We worked with the city, and we’ve talked briefly with the Ministry of Highways on some of our needs as well,” McClughan explained.

According to McClughan, anyone driving through the city on any given day will see semi tractor and trailers spread across the city.

“There’s a need for a place for people to park,” he noted.

He added that with expansion of the nearby canola crushing plant, this need will inevitably grow.

“It’s probably a 12-to-18-month construction timeframe. So, I’m hoping to be open either really late in 2026 or in the earlier part of 2027.”
