The Greenall Griffins football team is set to play in a game for the first time since a player suffered a severe injury during a game earlier this month. Hunter Gronick, a Grade 12 student, was diagnosed with a brain bleed after being injured in a game between the Griffins and the Swift Current Colts on Sept. 10. Gronick’s family has been posting updates on his recovery via a Facebook page called Hunter’s Headstrong Initiative, which is being built to help protect other players from head injuries and raise awareness. “While the neurosurgeon is still hopeful that Hunter’s journey has not come to an end and that he still has a long road of recovery ahead of him, it’s important to know that Hunter will never be the same as he was before the accident,” an update posted Thursday said. “We can’t say what will happen or how much more he will recover, but we need to remain hopeful that he continues to fight hard. This is difficult news, which we have been processing over the past few days.” The update added any additional money raised in an online fundraiser would be redirected to Hunter’s Headstrong Initiative. On the field, the Griffins were scheduled to be on a bye week prior to the Gronick’s injury ahead of a game in Estevan on Sept. 26. Saturday’s opponent, the Estevan Elecs, posted that admission from the game would go to Gronick, along with any other donations collected.
