The Globe Theatre is kicking off their new season on Friday night with a new comedy about a heist at a Regina Mosque. Mosque Heist was written by Zarqa Nawaz, a well-known Regina actor and creator of the Little Mosque on the Prairie TV show. In the play, a Muslim woman needs a lot of money in a hurry, robbing her own mosque on the most sacred night of the year. The play is a comedy with lots of laughs, but laughs that also needed to be respectful of the Muslim faith. “We invited all the Imans from the Mosques in Regina so they all came last night, and I met with them afterwards, and they were just ecstatic about how wonderful it was, about how we got all the little tiny details correct, and that it was funny but it was also very authentic to the community,” Nawaz said on Thursday. The stage director, Haysan Kadri, outlined the process. “It was a long process to make sure that we honour the culture, we honour the faith. But also have a show that’s really exciting and that from top to tail has a thru line that an audience can follow and understand and be really entertained,” he explained. The play features eight actors from across Canada and is scheduled to run until Oct. 18.
