‘All clear’ issued at Co-op Refinery following explosion

WATCH: Two workers were treated for minor injuries after a fire at the refinery in north Regina on Tuesday morning. Sierra D’Souza Butts has more.

Federated Co-operative Limited (FCL) says it has issued the “all clear” at its refinery complex in Regina after an early morning blast led to minor injuries for two workers on Tuesday.

At 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, FCL announced the “all clear” had been issued. The reported explosion and resulting fire occurred around 4:45 a.m.

According to the company, the fire was isolated to a single unit in section three of the refinery. The unit has been shut down and is considered to be in a “safe state.”

The rest of the refinery remains operational and has continued producing fuel, FCL noted.

Residents across Regina’s north end reported seeing a bright flash and hearing a loud “boom” in the early morning hours of Tuesday.

While members of the Regina Fire and Protective Services (RFPS) did respond to the refinery – the complex’s emergency response team was on scene first and was able to contain the incident.

“We thank the Regina Fire Department for their immediate assistance as their teams worked with us to successfully contain the incident,” FCL said in the update.

The company says the incident is now under investigation – with more details set to be released as information becomes available.
